Aqabat al-Khanqah

Why stop here

The street climbs here. Aqaba means ascent. It is named for the Khanqah al-Salahiyya, a Sufi lodge. Saladin founded it in the 1190s, in the old Latin Patriarch's palace.

Look for

• The Khanqah minaret, built in 1417.
• A cross and Greek letters carved into a wall: the Eighth Station.
• The slope underfoot. The street rises the whole way.

Context

This minaret has a twin. The other stands at the Mosque of Omar, on the far side of the church. The two were set at equal height, one on each side.
