Why stop here

This is the perfumers' market. It is the middle of three covered streets. All three run on the line of the Roman Cardo. Queen Melisende had them built in 1152.

Look for

• The stone vaults overhead, and the light slots in them.
• Shop fronts cut straight into medieval walls.
• The street runs north to south, like the Roman one below.

Context

The Crusaders called this street Malquisinat, the street of bad cooking. Cooked food was sold here to pilgrims. The perfume sellers came much later, and the name changed with them.
