Why stop here

This is the butchers' market, west of the perfumers'. The Crusaders knew it as the street of herbs. They sold herbs, fruit and spices here.

Look for

• The two markets run parallel, a few metres apart.
• Cross alleys linking one street to the next.
• The same Crusader vaulting as the street you just left.

Context

The two names have swapped over time. The herb street now sells meat. The bad-cooking street now sells perfume. Nine hundred years will do that.
