Why stop here

The lower end of the souq. Sweet shops and bakeries have worked this stretch for generations. Zalatimo opened here in 1860 and closed in 2019.

Look for

• Sweet shops and bakeries along both sides.
• The souq narrows as it nears the three markets.
• The three covered markets begin just south.

Context

Zalatimo sold one thing: mutabbaq, made by hand. The shop stood beside the Holy Sepulchre for 159 years. It shut in 2019. Not every old thing in this city survives.
